.KEY MESSAGES...
* Critical fire weather conditions will continue through this
evening for portions of southern Nevada and northwest Arizona due
to low humidity and gusty winds.
* Gusty winds will peak across the region today as a low pressure
system digs into the Desert Southwest.
* Below normal temperatures will return to the region today as
the cooling trend of the past few days continues through the
weekend. These cooler temperatures will continue through early
next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...through Friday.
Critical fire weather conditions will continue through this
evening for portions of southern Nevada and northwest Arizona as
southerly-to-southwesterly winds continue to ramp up due to an
upper-level trough digging into the area. These winds, combined
with critical fuels and single-digit relative humidities will
result in increased fire danger. As such, a Red Flag Warning
remains in effect for Lincoln County, Mohave County, and portions
of Clark County through later tonight. More details regarding this
Red Flag Warning can be found in the FIRE WEATHER discussion
below.
As the aforementioned trough digs into the area, we will see
southwesterly winds peak across the Mojave Desert this afternoon.
Gusty northwesterly winds will begin to push into Inyo County and
the southern Great Basin around mid-to-late afternoon, working their
way through southern Nevada, southeast California, and northwest
Arizona during the evening as the trough axis swings through.
Given that 40 to 50 mph wind gusts are expected across much of the
region today, Wind Advisories have been issued for Esmeralda
County, Mohave County, and portions of Clark, Nye, and San
Bernardino Counties. Instances of blowing dust resulting in
reduced visibility, unsecured items being blown away, and
difficult driving conditions for high profile vehicles are
expected as a result of these winds. Additionally, a Lake Wind
Advisory is in effect for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area
and Colorado River Valley as gusty winds will result in 2 to 4
foot waves on Lakes Mead, Mohave, and Havasu today.
The cooling trend of the past few days will continue through the
weekend, with below normal temperatures returning to the region
today. Sunday will be the coolest day of the forecast period with
high temperatures around 10 degrees cooler than normal. Temperatures
will remain cooler than normal into early next week as troughiness
lingers across the southwest.

.FIRE WEATHER...A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through
11:00 pm PDT/MST this evening for Nevada Fire Weather Zones 461,
465, and 466 and Arizona Fire Weather Zones 101 and 102. Critical
fire weather conditions are expected across portions of southern
Nevada and northwestern Arizona due to strong winds and low
humidity. 20 to 30 mph sustained southerly-to-southwesterly winds
are expected across the Red Flag Warning with gusts up to 40 mph
across southern Nevada and gusts up to 50 mph across northwest
Arizona. Relative humidities will bottom out in the single digits in
the afternoons. The low humidity combined with the strong winds will
result in an increased risk of wildfire starts and rapidly
growing/spreading fires. Outdoor burning and recreation involving
sparks or flames is not recommended. Dry conditions will persist
into early next week, but winds will decrease beginning on Sunday.
These lighter winds will help to mitigate the wildfire risk.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...South to
southwest winds will continue into this evening, with gusts of 30 to
35 knots likely from late morning through early evening. Winds
should diminish slightly after sunset, but they are expected to
shift to the north and increase around 07Z. There is some
disagreement regarding the magnitude of the winds after the wind
shift, with some models predicting speeds of 15 knots or less, while
others forecast gusts of up to 35 knots entering the valley. The
current forecast trends towards higher winds post-frontal, although
gusts have been kept below 30 knots. No significant cloud cover or
weather is expected, although smoke from fires in northern Mexico
may result in some reduced slantwise visibility this morning, mainly
along the southern approaches. There is also the potential for some
smoke from the Conner Fire near Lake Tahoe to reduce visibility
slightly after the wind shift tonight. Temperatures will stay below
100F today and Sunday.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Conditions at the Las
Vegas area TAF sites will be similar to those described for Harry
Reid, except the wind shift this evening is forecast to occur around
06Z at KVGT and 08Z at KHND. At KBIH, gusty northerly winds are
expected into this evening before gradually decreasing. Winds will
remain west to southwest at the remaining TAF sites through this
evening. Winds at KIFP will turn northerly towards daybreak
tomorrow, while westerly winds will remain at KEED and KDAG. No
significant cloud cover or weather is expected. However, smoke from
fires in northern Mexico may result in some reduced slantwise
visibility this morning, mainly in the Colorado River Valley and
northwest Arizona. There is also the potential for some smoke from
the Conner Fire near Lake Tahoe to cause reduced visibility over the
northern Owens Valley, as well as Esmeralda and Nye counties, this
evening and tonight.
